Fume Hood Management Report Energy Waste

MSU Fume Hood

Fume Hood Sash Management - It's More Important than You Think!!

Fume Hoods are here for Your Safety!
Laboratory fume hoods are safety devices intended to protect a worker's breathing zone from hazardous vapors released during the course of handling chemicals. Fume hoods are designed to create enough air velocity through either the open sash or airfoil bypass to prevent vapors from exiting the fume hood and exhausting them outside. Modern fume hoods are designed a bypass airfoil sill so that the sash can be completely shut while still maintaining proper airflow.

Fume Hood Facts
  • A CLOSED SASH MAKES A SAFE FUME HOOD

The sash should be kept as low as possible when working in the fume hood and closed when not in use.

  • FUME HOODS ARE A RESEARCH TOOL - NOT A STORAGE CABINET

Chemicals are not to be permanently stored in fume hoods. Chemicals should be properly stored in designated storage cabinets. Fume hoods are not an appropriate means of chemical and waste disposal. Contact your lab manager or Safety and Risk Management for assistance (994-2711).

  • YOUR SASH IS CONNECTED TO OUR STUDENT'S COST OF TUITION, RESEARCHER'S INDIRECT COSTS, AND MSU's COST OF OPERATION

Fume hoods exhaust a large amount of conditioned air to the atmosphere and can use as much energy as three to four average homes. The longer and higher that a sash is open, more energy is being used!

  • THIS FUME HOOD IS CONNECTED TO MSU's CARBON FOOTPRINT

The difference between poor and good fume hood management could result in this hood adding an extra 8 Metric Tons of CO2 or an extra 1.75 cars to the road.
