Facilities IT Server and Workstation Backups

What We Back Up and How Long We Keep It

  • Facilities Servers
Our highest priority is to back up all our servers on a daily basis. Our goal is to be able to restore any file backed up in the last 14 weeks and only lose changes made since the previous night’s backup.
    Servers We Back Up:
    1. IBM Series i5 Server (i.e., Green Screen or AS/400)
    2. Windows Print and File Servers
    3. Linux Servers

  • Selected Files on Local Workstations
To back up files on local workstations we use Symantec’s BackupExec Desktop-Laptop Option (DLO) software. Only certain file locations on users’ workstations are backed up - see the list below. Make sure to save your files in one of these locations if you want them to be backed up.
    Files backed up by DLO:
    1. Desktop files and shortcuts
    2. My Documents
    3. My Favorites (Internet Explorer bookmarks)
    4. Outlook personal folders
Our goal is to be able to restore any of the last three saved versions of files that were backed up in the last six months. Versions prior to the most recent three are not retained.

  • Images of Windows Workstations on the Facilities Services Network
Using Windows 7 Imaging Backup and Scheduling we make complete image backups of all computers once a month. We retain the most recent monthly image, as well as one that is approximately 6 months old.

Our goal is to be able to quickly restore the user's full computer configuration in the event of a severe virus/malware infection or hardware failure, using a Windows image and the selected files from Symantec BackupExec DLO.

We are currently backing up approximately

  • 7 Windows Servers
  • 9 Linux Servers
  • 125 Windows Workstations
